Africa's acacia belt stretches across the Sahel, a band of natural gum-bearing forest that marks the frontier between desert and farmland. Acacia trees fix nitrogen, anchor soil against wind erosion and shelter crops and livestock. Where the trees stand, the desert stops.
Harvesting gum makes the trees an asset: a tapped acacia earns its keep year after year, giving communities a direct economic reason to protect and replant. Gum arabic is one of the rare commodities where commerce and conservation pull in the same direction.
